Rev. Dr. Jim Barstow

I began my ministry here at Centerpoint in May of 1999 and immediately fell in love with the people of this church, the community of Roseville, and northern California. That is saying something from a guy who was born and raised in southern California!

I grew up in Orange County in a non-Christian home and came to know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior while in High School. Even though I had no sense of what it meant to be a pastor, I felt a call to be one early on in my walk with Jesus. That led me to serve as a youth and college director while getting my Religious Studies degree from California State Fullerton. After college I went on to seminary at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena and finished my Master of Divinity at Princeton Seminary in New Jersey. In 2002 I finished my doctoral work at Fuller Seminary.

One of the things I love most about pastoring and leading a church is seeing peoples' lives become transformed by the reality of the presence of God. And through the teachings of the truths of scripture, to have those “aha–God moments” with them that help them live out a fuller Christian life. That is what keeps me going as a pastor!

Some personal things about me are...my wife’s name is Suzi –she is a remarkable woman who continues to amaze me in how deeply she walks with God in her life. She works here at Centerpoint as the Editor of the Pulse and our Children/Adult theatre director. We have two children, Lauren and Trevor. Lauren graduated from Sacramento State and is working part time here at Centerpoint as a Media Technician. You may see her in the sound booth on Sundays in the Worship Center. Trevor is an Army Infantry soldier based in El Paso Texas when he is not deployed.

In my spare time I love to ride my motorcycle (I have a Victory Cross Country –NOT a Harley), golf with Suzi and friends, shoot trap, fix up our house, and read. Some of my favorites...

Favorite Foods: I drive my wife crazy with this...I like simple foods that tend not to be all that healthy for me (meat, Mexican, pizza) and she loves really healthy food. And I have a big “rule of tongue” for food – “no feet, no eat.” If it didn’t at one time have feet, I don’t eat it.

Favorite Books: I read a lot so whatever I am reading at the time is my favorite. My reading is almost all non-fiction (history is my favorite category) but do enjoy an occasional good fiction story.

Favorite Music: I am extremely eclectic, I mean extremely. My playlists have lots of Christian worship songs from various contemporary artists, as well as lots of rock and roll from the Beatles, CCR, Mumford & Sons, Pink, Neil Diamond, Adele, hits of the 70’s and 80’s, and more. Like I said, extremely eclectic.

Favorite Movies: I’m a guy so you can guess...action, adventure and some comedy. A good movie to me has to have something being blown up, with a great chase scene and humorous quips thrown in for good measure.
